PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

An exquisite brass fireplace companion set executed in the refined Neoclassical tradition and conceived in the manner of Maison Jansen, the legendary Parisian decorating house whose interiors of incomparable elegance defined the international standard for French decorative arts from the Belle Époque through the mid-20th century. The set comprises four tools—shovel, brush, poker, and tongs—arranged on a tall central stand in polished brass, each piece surmounted by a characteristic ovoid finial of classical inspiration.

The ovoid or egg-form finial—a motif drawn from the ancient vocabulary of the œuf and the acanthus—was among the most refined and enduring of Neoclassical ornamental elements, used extensively in French Empire and Louis XVI metalwork. Here, each tool finial is rendered in polished brass with a smooth, burnished surface, its form satisfying to the hand as well as the eye. The stand’s central column is crowned by a larger version of the same finial, giving the ensemble a unity of design seldom achieved in 20th-century fire accessories.

Maison Jansen, founded in Paris in 1880, became over the following century the most celebrated interior decorating firm in the world, dressing the homes of European royalty, international heads of state, and the wealthiest collectors with interiors of irreproachable taste. The firm’s fire accessories invariably reflected its commitment to quality materials, precise execution, and a deep understanding of historical style. The present set bears all the hallmarks of that tradition.

A complete and beautifully finished set in very good condition, whose slender proportions and polished brass surfaces will enhance any fireplace of period character or contemporary refinement.
