PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This fireplace companion set represents one of the more charming expressions of the fantasy design sensibility that flourished in French luxury objects of the late 1960s and 70s — a period in which designers and craftsmen enthusiastically applied the imagery of sport, leisure, and the dolce vita to the entire vocabulary of the decorative arts. Here, the conventional nécessaire de feu — stand, tools, and accessories — is reinterpreted entirely through the iconography of the game of golf.

The stand is composed of three slender angled legs in black lacquered metal, joined at their summit by a crossed framework serving as the tool rack. This structure is enriched at its crossing points and summit with golf club heads in chrome-plated brass — the characteristic profiles of iron club heads reproduced with decorative accuracy. The tools participate in the same dual material language: black lacquered metal shafts with chrome accents and golf-themed terminals.

Objects of this type were produced in France by specialised luxury gift workshops for wealthy golf enthusiasts who sought to deploy their passion for the sport in their most intimate domestic settings, from the country house library to the Parisian apartment salon. Such fantasy decorative objects occupy an interesting niche between the functional fireside accessory and the outright conversation piece.

A charming and wholly original piece, this companion set would make a delightful addition to a study, salon, or library with a sporting character, or to any collection of French decorative design curiosities from the 1970s.
