PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
This elegant brass fireplace companion set epitomises the refined neoclassical taste that pervaded French decorative arts throughout the late twentieth century. Comprising four tools — poker, tongs, brush and coal scoop — suspended from a circular ring holder, the ensemble is mounted on a tall slender stand terminating in a graceful three-footed tripod base. The overall form achieves a pleasing verticality, the straight-stemmed tools rising in disciplined alignment from their support to a height of approximately seventy centimetres.
The most arresting decorative feature of the set is its stacked multi-ball finials, each composed of a series of graduated brass spheres diminishing gracefully towards the tip — an ornamental vocabulary firmly rooted in the neoclassical and Empire repertoire. The branching crown of the stand mirrors this language, its turned and splayed arms providing both a visual flourish and a functional cradle for the tool ring. The entire surface is finished in a warm satin brass, lending the object a subdued golden lustre entirely consonant with the period drawing-room aesthetic.
The tripod base is elegantly wrought with three outswept feet, providing both stability and decorative appeal. The central column, attenuated and slightly tapered, culminates in the branching arms that cradle the circular tool ring. This structural solution — combining practical engineering with ornamental flair — is characteristic of the better quality fireplace furnishings produced in France during the postwar decades, when craftsmen sought to reconcile traditional forms with simplified production methods.
In very good overall condition, the set retains its original satin brass finish with only the light patination commensurate with age and careful use. A distinguished and immediately usable fireplace companion set, equally suited to a period interior or to a more eclectic contemporary arrangement in which fine decorative metalwork is at a premium.
