PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This tall and architecturally imposing fireplace companion set is distinguished by its unusual combination of rigorous geometric structure and naturalistic decoration. The stand is formed as a rectangular open cage of vertical wrought iron bars joined by horizontal cross-rails, from which the tools hang on curved iron hooks at varying heights. The ensemble is surmounted by two stylised deer head finials modelled in wrought iron with characteristic economy — the angular faces, ear details, and loop elements rendered with the bold simplification typical of French Art Déco decorative ironwork of the 1940s. The visual contrast between the grid-like severity of the cage and the organic expressiveness of the animal heads creates a tension that is central to the piece’s character.

The tools — comprising poker, shovel, tongs, and brush — hang from curved hooks integrated into the horizontal rail, combining accessible storage with a visually elegant display. The wrought iron throughout is hand-worked, with the characteristic textured surface of hammer-forged metal. The blackened finish, consistent across all elements, lends the set a unified, dramatic presence suited to a traditional or period interior. At 83.5 cm in height, the set commands considerable presence in front of any fireplace.

The set is in good overall condition, retaining the original blackened wrought iron finish with patination consistent with age and fireside use. The deer head finials are intact and well-modelled, and the stand is structurally sound. All four tools are present. Surface wear and oxidation consistent with age contribute to the ensemble’s character and authenticity.

Deer and hunting motifs were a popular decorative vocabulary in French metalwork of the Art Déco period, reflecting the enduring association of the stag with French aristocratic and hunting culture. The stylised treatment — reducing the deer head to its essential angular forms — is characteristic of the fusion of naturalistic subject matter with geometric modernist form that distinguishes the best French decorative ironwork of the inter-war and early post-war decades. This companion set is an accomplished example of that tradition.
