PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This fireplace companion set represents the more adventurous end of French decorative metalwork design of the early 1970s, a moment when a generation of designers and craftsmen sought to move beyond the inherited neoclassical and modernist vocabularies toward a freer, more expressively formal language. The set is executed in matte black lacquered metal throughout, a finish that suppresses surface reflection and forces the eye to attend to pure form: to the contours and profiles of the pieces as sculptural objects rather than as reflective surfaces.

The defining characteristic of the design is the handle treatment. Each tool is fitted with a slender, flat metal strap that curves and undulates along its length in a gently sinuous profile. These flat, ribbon-like forms stand in deliberate contrast to the conventional cylindrical or twisted handles of period fireplace sets, choosing instead a linear vocabulary that refers to contemporary sculpture, to the ribbon-like forms of certain 1970s graphic design, and to the spatial investigations of minimalist and post-minimalist art. Gathered together on the compact stand, the handles form an almost calligraphic cluster, their parallel but individually varied curves creating a composition that rewards examination from multiple angles.

The stand that holds the tools is conceived with equal economy, its compact circular or low-profile base keeping the overall silhouette vertical and uncluttered. The combination of matte black lacquer, flat metal, and sinuous line gives the set an identity that is immediately recognisable as of its period while transcending period limitations through the quality of its formal invention. A set of this character would have been found in the most design-conscious French interiors of the 1970s, alongside furniture by Pierre Paulin or Olivier Mourgue and lighting by Verpan or Roger Tallon.

In very good condition, retaining the original matte black lacquer with natural age. A characterful and distinctly designed piece of mid-century French decorative craft, with a sculptural presence that sets it apart from more conventional fireplace accessories.
