PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
A refined small-scale neoclassical lantern in patinated bronze, featuring a cylindrical body of clear glass contained within a bronze armature of vertical ribs and classical mouldings, surmounted by a domed bronze crown and suspended by a matching chain and canopy (height given does not include chain and canopy). The bronze elements are worked with quiet precision, the ribs and mouldings reflecting the disciplined neoclassical vocabulary that defined the finest French decorative arts of the 1940s.
The hanging lantern form carries a distinguished history in French interior design, descending directly from the great lantern-makers of the 18th century who lit the corridors of Versailles, the Palais Royal, and the grand hôtels particuliers of the Faubourg Saint-Germain. In the early 20th century this tradition was revived and refined by the foremost Parisian bronze houses and ateliers of ferronnerie d'art, which drew upon classical prototypes to create pieces of enduring elegance for luxury residential interiors. The neoclassical vocabulary of pilasters, dentil mouldings, and acanthus finials was especially well suited to the rigorously classical interiors favoured by leading decorators and their clientele in the interwar decades.
This lantern is ideally suited to a variety of interior positions: suspended in an entrance hall or foyer, above a stairwell, over a dining table for intimate atmosphere, or in a bedroom or corridor as an elegant accent light. Its modest scale bestows a versatility that permits it to complement both intimate spaces and larger rooms with equal ease. The warmth of patinated bronze combined with the soft glow diffused through its clear glass panels makes this a supremely atmospheric and beautiful lighting object.
