PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This elegant brass log holder, in the neoclassical taste, is designed as a shallow rectangular trough with gently flared sides, raised on four small ball feet and fitted with a tall gracefully arched circular carrying handle. The form is at once functional and sculptural, the wide arc of the handle rising above the log-filled body to create a silhouette of pleasing simplicity that recalls the refined accessories of the Louis XVI and Directoire periods.

Wrought throughout in polished brass, the piece benefits from the warm golden tone of the metal, which is set off to advantage against the dark wood of its contents. The ball feet — a recurring motif in the neoclassical vocabulary — elevate the trough slightly from the hearth surround, protecting both floor and piece while adding a light ornamental accent. The circular handle, formed from a single brass rod bent into a perfect arc and terminating in simple collared joints at either side, demonstrates the restrained elegance typical of quality French fireside accessories of the period.

This style of log carrier enjoyed particular favour in France during the 1960s and 1970s, when the neoclassical revival in interior decoration prompted artisans to reproduce and adapt the forms of the Ancien Régime for the modern household. The sober lines and golden warmth of polished brass made this an ideal companion to the period drawing rooms, entrance halls and libraries in which it was typically displayed.

In very good overall condition, retaining its original warm satin-polished brass finish throughout, with only the light surface oxidation and patination to be expected from age. A handsome and entirely practical log carrier, adding a note of golden refinement to any fireside arrangement.
