Ceramic Sun Mirror on Red Ground, Attributed to Oswald Tiberghien — Belgian Work, Circa 1960

This boldly conceived ceramic mirror presents a square format of fifty-four centimetres to a side, its central circular mirror plate encircled by a dramatic surround of hand-modelled ceramic elements arranged as a stylised sunburst. Each ray is formed as a bold geometric triangle — slightly raised and vigorously textured — glazed in a deep, saturated red and accented with a contrasting grey-white slip that accentuates the relief of the modelling. The effect is at once archaic and thoroughly mid-century: a solar emblem rendered with the graphic assurance of the postwar decorative arts.

The work is attributed to Oswald Tiberghien, a Belgian ceramist who gained recognition in the 1950s and 1960s for his vigorously modelled decorative ceramics. Belgium in this period produced a remarkable number of ceramic artists working in the decorative tradition, and Tiberghien's sun mirrors became among the most distinctive objects of the genre — their bold relief and vivid glazes perfectly suited to the taste for warm, artisan-inflected interiors that characterised the era. The combination of red and grey in the glaze palette reflects both the earthy warmth of the ceramic medium and a rigorously modern graphic sensibility.

The piece presents in fine condition with the glazes rich and undamaged and the mirror plate clear and unspotted. Its perfectly square format and commanding scale make it equally at home hung alone as a statement object or grouped with other works in a curated salon arrangement. An exceptional example of mid-century Belgian ceramic art, and a piece with genuine decorative presence.
