PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

A tall oval rattan mirror of generous proportions and characteristic mid-century construction. The frame follows the classic oblong or stadium silhouette — vertical sides running parallel for the greater part of the height, with smoothly rounded ends at top and bottom — and is constructed from tightly woven rattan cane that gives the frame a continuous textured surface of warm natural brown. The depth of the frame — fully 5 centimetres — means the piece has a pronounced three-dimensional presence when hung, the woven profile projecting from the wall and casting its own shadow.

The oval format has a long history in French mirror-making, from the gilt console mirrors of the eighteenth century to the cane and wicker furnishings of the post-war decades. In rattan, the oval mirrors of the 1960s and 1970s offered a warmer and more informal interpretation of the form: the natural material substituted for carved wood or gilded plaster, and the woven construction for classical mouldings. The result is a piece that manages to be at once traditional in its format and entirely of its era in its material.

At 74 centimetres tall and 46.5 centimetres wide, this mirror is well-proportioned for use as a hall mirror, a dressing mirror or a focal point in a living room or bedroom. Its tall, narrow oval silhouette draws the eye upward while reflecting a useful area, and its natural rattan colour will integrate effortlessly into a wide range of interior palettes.

In very good condition, the rattan frame intact and even throughout. Overall dimensions: 46.5 cm wide by 74 cm tall, 5 cm deep. A handsome and practical example of French mid-century rattan mirror-making in its most classical oval format.
