PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

A substantial square mirror in a deeply woven rope frame attributed to Adrien Audoux and Frida Minet, the French design duo whose rope-based furniture and objects defined a distinctly mid-twentieth-century French decorative aesthetic. The frame is constructed in a tight basket-weave pattern using natural rope cord wound around a rigid internal armature, the rounded corners softening the square format into a form that is at once structured and organic. With a depth of 9 centimetres throughout, the frame asserts a markedly three-dimensional character — not merely a border for the glass but an object in its own right, rich in texture and tactile warmth.

Audoux-Minet began their collaboration in the early post-war years, producing furniture, lighting and decorative objects that drew on the materials of coastal and rural France — hemp cord, rope and natural fibres — and transformed them through meticulous craft into pieces of considerable domestic elegance. Their work attracted early attention from leading French architects and decorators, and their mirrors, chairs and lamps are today recognised as touchstones of French mid-century design. Directly attributed pieces are increasingly rare on the market and command correspondingly serious collector attention.

The mirror glass is set within the woven surround, its rectangular aperture precisely fitted within the interior dimension of the frame. The woven rope retains its natural warm brown tone throughout, the basket-weave pattern showing to its best advantage in raking light where the relief of the woven surface creates a play of light and shadow across the frame’s considerable depth. The piece can be hung both portrait and landscape, adding to its versatility.

In very good condition overall, consistent with a piece of this age and significance. Overall dimensions: 67.5 cm wide by 68.5 cm tall, 9 cm in frame depth. An exceptional opportunity to acquire a documented example of Audoux-Minet rope work at an accessible scale for a collector or a discerning private interior.
