Giltwood Octagonal Mirror with Glazing-Bead Frame

The octagonal mirror has been one of the most enduring and distinguished forms in French decorative tradition. From the great pier glasses of the Galerie des Glaces to the convex mirrors of the Restoration, the mirror frame in France has always been as much an object of ornamental ambition as a functional necessity, its gilded wood carvings, incised mouldings, and shaped profiles contributing as much to an interior as the wall paintings and textiles that surround it.

This mirror, in carved and gilded wood with a glazing-bead frame — pare-closes in the French terminology, the thin profiled strips that hold the glass in its rebated frame — dates from around 1970, a decade that saw a broad revival of interest in classical French interior forms. The octagonal format, with its eight equal or alternating sides, produces a geometry that is at once rigorous and dynamic, creating a more complex wall presence than the simple rectangle while remaining equally versatile in placement.

The gilded wood frame is worked with the controlled precision characteristic of French menuiserie-dorure: a carved or moulded profile, its surfaces finished in gold leaf or gold paint, catching the light across the multiple planes of the octagonal outline. The pale-glazed mirror glass occupies the full interior, undistorted, maximising the mirror's capacity to reflect and amplify light in its placement.

At 64 × 82 cm, the mirror is well-proportioned for a drawing room, entrance hall, bedroom, or above a fireplace. In very good condition. A refined and classically French piece that brings light and proportion to any interior.
