PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
This suite of eight porcelain plates is a distinguished example of the chinoiserie tradition in French decorative arts. Each plate presents a deep, lustrous black ground evoking the lacquerware of the Far East, against which a wide gilded rim and a central lobed medallion are brought into sharp relief. The medallion, shaped as a scalloped cartouche, is painted in burnished gold with a chinoiserie scene — a delicate composition of pagoda architecture, willowy trees and figures in a Chinese garden landscape, rendered in the fluid, evocative manner characteristic of French interpretations of the Orient.
The black and gold palette places these plates within the long French tradition of lacquer-inspired table decoration, traceable from the imports of laque de Chine in the 17th century through the chinoiserie craze of the Rococo period and its successive revivals. The mid-20th century saw a renewed appetite for this aesthetic, particularly in the Parisian luxury interior furnishing trade, where black-ground porcelain with gold chinoiserie remained an unmistakable mark of refinement and cosmopolitan taste.
Each plate bears on the reverse a gilt signature "Delvaux Paris", identifying the prestigious Parisian luxury retailer who commissioned or distributed the service, along with the mark "Made in France". This indicates production at one of the great French porcelain workshops — most likely Limoges — to a specification set by the Paris house. The retailer's signature in gilt is itself indicative of a high-end commission: only pieces intended for the luxury market received such treatment.
With a diameter of 27 cm and a depth of 3 cm, the plates are generously proportioned for decorative display or use as dessert or side plates in a formal table setting. Eight plates constitute a complete service for a table of eight, making this suite both a cohesive decorative ensemble and a practical acquisition for collectors of French luxury tableware.
