PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This cocktail shaker in the form of a champagne bottle is one of the most satisfying formal conceits of French Art Déco barware. The overall silhouette faithfully reproduces the champagne bottle — the cylindrical body with its distinctive shoulder, the long tapering neck, and the characteristic closure — in silver-plated metal patinated to a deep tone that evokes the dark green glass of the bottle. Brass elements, including a decorative neck band with engraved motifs and a ball stopper, provide chromatic contrast and functional closure. Presented on the bar or table, the object performs a perfect trompe-l’œil: it is the champagne bottle itself that produces the cocktails.

The cocktail shaker emerged as one of the defining objects of the Art Déco period, its cylindrical or conical form lending itself to extraordinary formal invention. French designers and workshops of the 1920s and 1930s produced shakers in the forms of lighthouses, penguins, aeroplanes, and other wit-laden conceits, always maintaining the functional elegance that distinguished their work from mere novelty. The champagne bottle form is among the most logically compelling of these inventions: the proportions of the champagne bottle translate naturally into a tall, elegant shaker, and the thematic association between the bottle and its festive contents enriches the object with an additional layer of meaning.

The two-metal construction — dark silver-plated body and bright brass fittings — is characteristic of the finest French metalwork of the period, where the interplay of different metal surfaces was a primary decorative device. The brass neck band with its engraved decoration provides a note of refinement that elevates the piece above mere novelty. The quality of the construction, the precision of the forms, and the rarity of the object place it firmly within the category of significant Art Déco decorative arts.

An exceptionally rare form, seldom encountered at this quality. The piece is in good condition consistent with its age. Dimensions: 9 × 9 × 33 cm.
