PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
A handsome set of three graduated nesting tables combining the warm richness of rosewood veneer with the cool precision of polished chrome, this French suite from around 1970 represents the modernist interior at its most considered. Nesting tables had been a staple of French design since the early twentieth century, but the marriage of exotic wood and chrome in the 1970s produced examples of particular sophistication — pieces in which the contrast of materials was itself the primary design idea.
Each table is built around a distinctive sled-form base: pairs of flat polished chrome vertical fins rise from a horizontal chrome sled, their precise geometry providing both structural support and a strong architectural silhouette. The flat-bar chrome elements slide past one another as the tables nest, allowing all three to occupy a minimal footprint when stored together while expanding freely across a seating area when deployed individually.
The rectangular tops are veneered in rosewood, the warm amber-brown grain offering an immediate visual counterpoint to the cool chrome below. Rosewood was a favoured material in French and Scandinavian design of the 1960s and 1970s; its colour deepens with age and use, and these examples carry the rich, honeyed patina characteristic of the period’s finest production. The largest table measures 53 × 34 × 43 cm.
The set presents in excellent condition, the chrome bright and scratch-free, the veneers intact and unwarped. Nesting tables of this type — with genuine rosewood and well-crafted chrome bases — are increasingly difficult to find in complete sets, making this a particularly desirable acquisition.
