PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
This large and exuberant patchwork panel, signed by the French textile artist Jean Joseph, presents a stylised rooster rendered in a jubilant palette of polychrome fabrics against a deep black ground. The bird — strutting and proud, its magnificent tail feathers sweeping in great arcs behind it — is built up from hundreds of small fabric pieces in shades of orange, gold, amber, saffron, rose, crimson, and green, assembled with the precision and patience of a textile mosaic. Each patch contributes to the overall impression of richness and movement, the overlapping forms drawing the eye across the composition in a continuous circuit. Measuring sixty-nine centimetres in width and ninety-nine centimetres in height, the work is presented mounted and ready to hang.
The patchwork tradition, rooted in the practical recycling of textile scraps across centuries of European and American folk culture, was enthusiastically embraced by the decorative arts of the 1960s and 1970s as an expressive artistic medium in its own right. In France, a generation of textile artists elevated the technique from its humble origins into works of genuine formal ambition, producing wall panels and hangings that combined the warmth of craft with the graphic boldness of postwar decorative design. The rooster — the Gallic cockerel, one of the great symbolic figures of French culture — is treated here as a subject of exuberant decorative art, playful and assured in equal measure.
The work is in very fine condition, the colours vivid and the textile surfaces clean and undamaged. The black ground amplifies the brilliance of the polychrome patches, ensuring the image commands immediate attention from across the room. A work of strong character and decorative presence that would animate any interior.
