PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
This elegant guéridon exemplifies the luxurious material palette and refined geometric sensibility of French Art Déco at its most accomplished. The square tabletop, veneered in blond sycamore with a natural silky grain, rests on a chrome-plated columnar pedestal of classical proportions, while the surface is finished with a slab of veined marble. The dialogue between the warm pallor of the sycamore, the cold brilliance of the chrome, and the mineral depth of the marble is characteristic of the finest French cabinet-making of the 1930s.
The use of sycamore veneer — a wood highly favoured by Art Déco designers for its pale, luminous figure and even grain — places this piece firmly within the tradition of the grand Parisian ébénistes of the inter-war period. The combination of figured wood with polished chrome hardware and a marble top was a composition favoured by workshops supplying the leading Parisian decorating houses of the era, producing furniture that balanced modernist austerity with the sensuousness of precious natural materials.
In excellent original condition, the sycamore veneer retains its pale golden tone, the chrome its original polish, and the marble its characteristic natural veining. The compact proportions — 61.5 × 61.5 cm in plan and 64.5 cm in height — make this a highly versatile piece, equally suited as a guéridon, lamp table, or bedside table in an Art Déco interior. A polished example of French craftsmanship from the golden decade of the style.
