PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
This refined jardinière exemplifies the elegant restraint of the Charles X style, which flourished in France between approximately 1820 and 1830 under the reign of the last Bourbon king. The rectangular planter is veneered in richly figured mahogany, its surfaces enlivened with a pattern of geometric marquetry in amaranth — the dense, violet-toned hardwood sourced from South America that was among the most prized accent timbers of the Restoration and Charles X cabinetmakers. The interplay between the warm reddish-brown of the mahogany ground and the deeper, cooler purple of the amaranth inlay creates a sophisticated visual rhythm entirely characteristic of the period’s taste for controlled ornament.
The piece rests on a scrolled «X»-form base, one of the defining support structures of the Charles X style, its crossed members curving gracefully to meet at a central ring before splaying outward to four finely cast gilt bronze claw feet. These lion-paw terminals, chased with naturalistic detail, add a note of imperial authority and confirm the quality of the maker. The «X» base had its origins in ancient Roman folding stools and was revived during the Directoire and Empire periods before reaching its most refined expression under Charles X.
Jardinières of this type served the fashionable early nineteenth-century taste for cultivating exotic plants and flowers indoors, often displaying potted plants in the salons and ante-chambers of aristocratic and bourgeois households. This example retains excellent structural integrity and presents very well, its veneers stable and the bronzes still carrying their gilding.
