PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This refined small sculpture in polished brass captures two long-necked wading birds — cranes or herons — standing side by side on a shared base, their slender legs slightly spread for balance and their necks rising in parallel before curving towards each other in a graceful interlacing arc. The composition has the quality of a musical notation: the two figures are clearly distinct yet inseparable, bound together at the apex of their S-curved necks in a gesture that speaks simultaneously of tenderness, balance, and elegant formal invention. The polished brass glows with a warm golden light that accentuates the fluidity of the forms.

The motif of paired birds with entwined or mirrored forms is one of the most enduring in the decorative arts — carrying across cultures associations of fidelity, conjugal happiness, and the harmony of complementary forces. In the context of French mid-century decorative sculpture, the use of polished brass for figurative subjects of this kind reflects the tendency of the period to explore the metal's capacity to render organic, animated forms with a smoothness and luminosity that stone or bronze could not match. The lightness of the composition — the birds seemingly balanced on impossibly slender legs — is itself a demonstration of the material's structural possibilities.

Measuring fifteen centimetres in width and twenty-eight centimetres in height, the sculpture is perfectly scaled for a desktop, a shelf, or the surface of a sideboard or console. The brass is in fine condition, polished and warm throughout. A small but refined object of genuine charm and decorative presence.
