Large Bronze Recumbent Stag with Engraved Shamanic Motifs

This commanding large bronze depicts a stag at rest, its legs folded gracefully beneath its body and its magnificent antlers rising in a bold, branching spread above the head. At over sixty centimetres in both length and height, the piece has a powerful physical presence that commands any interior in which it is placed. The warm golden-brown patina of the cast bronze surface contributes to the sense of antiquity and authority, and the overall modelling of the animal — the powerful haunches, the alert poise of the head, the carefully rendered musculature of the neck and shoulders — demonstrates a considerable sculptural skill.

What distinguishes this piece from conventional animalier bronzes is the elaborate programme of incised decoration that covers the entire surface of the animal’s body. These engraved motifs — spirals, geometric patterns, stylised natural forms, and abstract symbols — belong to the visual language of shamanic traditions found across the steppes of Central Asia, Mongolia, Siberia, and the Tibetan plateau, where the deer or stag has long been one of the most potent and sacred totemic animals. Bronzes engraved with such cosmological patterns were produced throughout the ancient and medieval periods and continued in later decorative traditions inspired by these archetypes.
