PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
These two decorative duck sculptures combine silvered metal bodies with gilt brass details to achieve a sophisticated two-tone effect that is entirely characteristic of mid-twentieth century decorative metalwork. The birds are modelled with the streamlined elegance of the Art Deco tradition, their forms reduced to smooth, aerodynamic volumes that emphasise the natural grace of the duck in repose. The necks are elongated and gently curved, the heads compact and alert, while the flat brass bases give each figure a stable, clean-lined support. The contrast between the cool silvered sheen of the bodies and the warmer golden tone of the brass beaks and webbed feet creates a lively material dialogue that enlivens any interior setting.
Decorative bird sculptures in silvered and gilt metal were extremely popular in the mid-twentieth century, when they featured prominently in the chic interiors of the post-war period, adorning sideboards, console tables, and fireplaces in bourgeois French homes. The duck, as a motif, carried associations with hunting, the countryside, and the traditional French way of life, making such pieces appealing to a wide range of collectors and decorators.
This pair is in good decorative condition and displays well together, each bird animated by a slightly different orientation of the neck, giving the pair a sense of natural movement and dialogue. They would look equally fine in a country house or a contemporary Parisian interior.
