PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
This delightful sculpture depicts a long-billed wading bird — almost certainly a curlew or Eurasian woodcock — captured in a naturalistic standing pose, its head slightly lowered as if probing the ground for prey. The body is carved in wood and finished in a richly mottled dark brown and black polychrome that faithfully replicates the camouflaged plumage of these woodland and wetland birds, with subtle tonal variations suggesting the streaked, barred markings of the species. The long, gently down-curved beak is cast in brass with a warm golden patina, as are the slender legs and the splayed four-toed feet, rendered with anatomical precision down to each jointed toe.
The combination of carved wood and cast brass or bronze for decorative bird sculptures has a long tradition in European decorative arts, from the hunting trophies and game-bird sculptures of the seventeenth-century Netherlands to the animalier bronzes of nineteenth-century France. This piece, with its folk-art directness and its pleasing material contrast between the dark wood body and the gleaming metal extremities, belongs to this tradition while retaining an immediacy and character that sets it apart from purely academic works.
Such bird sculptures were popular in bourgeois and country house interiors throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, particularly in households where hunting was practised — the curlew and woodcock being prized game birds in France and across Europe. The piece displays well on a mantlepiece, bookshelf, or in a hunting-themed interior.
