PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This distinctive terracotta sculpture takes the form of a circular disc from which a human face emerges in high relief, the features modelled with an expressive, somewhat archetypal quality that recalls the traditions of both pre-Columbian ceramics and twentieth-century European studio pottery. The disc is mounted on a square socle of the same fired clay, forming a coherent sculptural object that functions equally as a wall relief or a freestanding table sculpture. The warm, unglazed terracotta surface has a rich texture that enhances the tactile immediacy of the work.

The piece is signed and bears the original paper label of Jean-Claude Vanhaecke, described on the label as a ‘céramiste’ based in Berchem (BRCHS), most likely Berchem-Sainte-Agathe, a commune in the Brussels Capital Region with a long tradition of artisanal craftsmanship. Vanhaecke’s work belongs to a distinguished lineage of Belgian studio ceramists who, in the post-war decades, elevated the medium of fired clay to the status of fine art, producing sculptural objects that transcended mere decoration to engage with questions of form, texture, and the human figure.

The face itself is rendered with a compelling ambiguity — part mask, part portrait — with deep-set eyes and clearly articulated features that give the work a powerful presence disproportionate to its modest size. Such pieces were typically produced in small series or as unique works, making each example a distinct artistic statement.
