French Bronze Bust of a Crowned Bearded Monarch, circa 1940

This small but striking bronze bust depicts a bearded monarch wearing an elaborate open crown adorned with stylised foliate ornaments. The face is powerfully modelled, with deep-set eyes beneath a furrowed brow, a full moustache and beard rendered with finely chased detail, and abundant curly hair falling about the temples and nape. The truncated shoulders rest on a plain socle integrated into the casting. The surface carries a rich, dark brown patina of exceptional depth, suggestive of antiquity yet fully consistent with a French foundry production of the 1930s–1940s.

Works of this type — small cabinet bronzes evoking medieval or Renaissance kingship — were popular in the decorative arts of early twentieth-century France, when a romantic nostalgia for the ancient monarchy informed both popular taste and scholarly collecting. The crowned monarch with his regal bearing and expressive physiognomy draws on a long iconographic tradition stretching from Carolingian reliquary busts to the portrait medallions of the Italian Renaissance.

The quality of the casting and chasing, the integration of crown and hair into a unified silhouette, and the refinement of the dark patina all speak to an accomplished French fondeur working in the academic tradition.
