PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This beautiful pair of porcelain figures presents two young women in the graceful costume of the early 19th century — the high-waisted dress, the carefully dressed hair, the delicate hands — each cradling a dove in a gesture of tender intimacy. At 40 cm in height, the figures are of impressive scale, and the quality of the modelling and painting is consistent throughout: the faces are painted with refined, individualised features; the costumes are rendered in soft polychrome enamels with blue, cream, and gilt accents; and the birds are modelled with the same attentive naturalism as the figures themselves.

The subject of a young woman with a dove is among the most enduring in French decorative porcelain, combining the symbolic vocabulary of innocence, love, and domestic virtue that was central to the aesthetic sensibility of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Presented as a pair, the figures acquire an additional dimension: they are conceived as mirror images, each completing the other, the slight variations in pose and gesture between them suggesting a narrative of companionship or sisterhood. Such pairs were a staple product of the great French porcelain centres — Paris, Limoges, and the smaller regional ateliers that flourished in their wake.

Dating to around 1880, these figures belong to the wave of historicist porcelain production that swept France in the second half of the 19th century, as manufacturers and ateliers revisited the subjects and styles of the First Empire and Restauration periods. The warm, soft palette and the idealistic treatment of the subjects are entirely characteristic of this tradition. The figures are in good condition consistent with their age, with the fine painted details largely intact.

An important and decorative pair, with the scale and presence to command attention in any interior. Dimensions: W. 15.5 × D. 14 × H. 40 cm each.
