PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This magnificent carved wood element bears all the hallmarks of Italian Baroque decorative craftsmanship at its most exuberant. The form rises from a Carrara marble base through a sequence of boldly sculpted acanthus leaves arranged in a radiating fan — a motif rooted in Graeco-Roman antiquity but reinterpreted with the theatrical vigour characteristic of the 18th-century Italian workshops. The surface retains its original gilding, now mellowed to a warm, antique gold that speaks of age and authentic provenance.

Such elements served a variety of purposes in the grand interiors of 18th-century Italy: as finials crowning beds, cabinets, or cornices; as central ornaments on consoles or mantelpieces; or as components of elaborate mirror and frame constructions. The acanthus leaf — symbol of enduring life and ornamental abundance — was the leitmotif of Baroque and Rococo decoration, deployed with consummate skill by the carvers and gilders of Rome, Florence, Venice, and Turin. The quality of the carving here, with its crisp undercutting and confident massing of the leaf forms, points to an accomplished workshop.

The Carrara marble base on which the element rests is itself a refined choice: the brilliant white of the marble — quarried in Tuscany since antiquity and prized above all other stones by sculptors and architects — provides an elegant foil for the warm gilded wood above. The stub at the top of the element indicates its original function as a terminal finial and also renders it entirely suitable for conversion into a lamp standard, with a fitting discreetly introduced through the centre.

A rare and beautiful survivor from 18th-century Italian decorative arts, with remarkable presence and versatility as a decorative object or a lamp base. Dimensions: W. 27.5 × D. 9.5 × H. 42.5 cm.
