Modernist Polished Brass Heron Sculpture on Ebonised Wood Base, French circa 1970

A refined decorative sculpture in polished brass representing a stylised heron in a characteristic pose of watchful stillness. The bird stands on two slender twisted wire legs of brass that rise from a circular ebonised wood base — the contrast between the dark, matte disc of the base and the warm luminosity of the polished brass body and legs giving the piece a composed, almost graphic quality when seen from a distance. The long, curved neck carries a small, alert head with a pointed bill, and the body is rendered with the economy of the best mid-century animalier work: naturalistic enough to be immediately legible, but simplified to the point where individual feathers give way to the flowing, unified surface of a sculptural form.

The twisted wire technique used for the legs is a hallmark of French decorative craftwork of the 1960s and 70s, most closely associated with the tradition of wrought and worked metal animals produced in Paris workshops for the luxury furnishings market. The technique lends the legs an intrinsic visual interest — the twist catching the light to create a gentle sparkle along each limb — while remaining absolutely appropriate to the delicacy of the wading bird it represents.

At 28.5 centimetres tall, the piece has the presence of a small sculptural monument while remaining perfectly proportioned for a desk, console, or side table.
