PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
A charming pair of decorative sculptures in polished brass, each representing a swan in a graceful resting pose. The long sinuous neck — the defining characteristic of the cygnus silhouette — rises and curves with a naturalistic elegance from the smooth, rounded body, terminating in a small, alert head with a short bill. The overall form is simplified without being schematic, retaining the essential poetry of the swan’s shape while submitting it to the reductive clarity of mid-century decorative sensibility.
The polished brass surface is immaculate, catching light along the curves of neck and body to create a shifting play of warm gold reflections. The smooth finish emphasises the sculptural purity of each outline and gives the pair a unified decorative presence. At 20 centimetres tall, each piece is perfectly scaled for a mantelpiece, a bedside table, or a pair of shelves, and the two swans, placed facing or mirroring one another, form a naturally balanced composition.
Swans have long occupied a privileged place in European decorative art, their association with grace, fidelity, and aristocratic refinement making them perennial favourites in the luxury furnishings repertoire. These brass examples, with their restrained stylisation and high-quality finish, belong to the tradition of French decorative animalier work that flourished in the decades following the war, produced in small workshops serving the luxury interior market.
French craftwork, circa 1970. Sold as a pair.
