PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

A remarkable decorative sculpture cast and chased in polished brass, representing a land turtle in faithful naturalistic detail. The carapace is rendered with exceptional care, its surface articulated into the characteristic geometric scutes of a tortoise shell — each panel individually worked to convey the distinctive raised-ridge pattern of the living animal. The four sturdy legs, each terminating in splayed clawed feet, are convincingly modelled in the round, while the head extends forward with quiet alertness and a short tail is visible at the rear.

The warm golden patina of the polished brass lends the piece a richness and weight entirely in keeping with its subject: the tortoise has long been a symbol of longevity, wisdom, and steadfastness in both Eastern and Western decorative traditions. The casting is of high quality, with none of the summary treatment that characterises purely commercial work; instead, the sculptor has taken evident pleasure in the anatomical particularities of the carapace, whose scute divisions follow the real morphology of a Hermann’s tortoise with considerable care.

At 33.5 centimetres in length, the piece commands attention on a desk, console, or low table without overwhelming its setting. Its solid brass construction gives it a satisfying heft, and the smooth underside rests securely on any surface. Such sculptural naturalia were a recurring feature of the grand bureau and the bibliothèque in the decorating tradition of the 1960s and 1970s, when pieces combining zoological fidelity with precious metalwork enjoyed renewed favour among discerning collectors.

Attributed to French craftwork of the 1970s, the piece belongs to a distinguished lineage of decorative brass animal sculptures produced for the luxury furnishings market in the years following the postwar revival of the antique trade. It would sit comfortably in an interior furnished in the spirit of Maison Jansen or in any refined contemporary setting where a touch of wit and natural history is welcome.
