PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This compact and refined oval drinks trolley in silvered brass stands as a characteristic example of the neoclassical mode that Maison Jansen elevated to an art form in the first half of the twentieth century. Maison Jansen, founded in Paris in 1880 by Dutch decorator Jean-Henri Jansen, became the preeminent interior design house of the Belle Époque and interwar periods, furnishing the palaces, embassies, and private residences of the world’s most discerning clients.

The trolley is formed around a slender oval frame in cast silvered brass, its structure animated by openwork galleries and neoclassical ornamental details. A removable oval tray rests within the gallery, while the piece is carried on four elegantly curved legs terminating in caster wheels for ease of service. The silvered finish gives the piece a cooler, more formal character than gilt or natural brass counterparts, lending it a restrained sophistication perfectly suited to the silver service traditions of the grand salon.

The neoclassical vocabulary—fluted legs, restrained proportions, classical gallery profiles—is handled with the consummate skill for which Jansen’s workshops were celebrated. The oval form, a favourite of the Directoire period, is here reinterpreted with the precision and refinement that defined the Jansen aesthetic: luxurious in material, immaculate in finish, timeless in proportion.

An elegant and desirable piece from the golden age of Parisian decorative arts. In excellent condition, retaining its beautiful silvered patina. W. 56.5 × D. 37.5 × H. 59 cm.
