PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This distinguished chest of drawers is clothed entirely in straw and bamboo marquetry of the finest quality — its surface composed of carefully laid, natural-toned sections of flattened straw and bamboo arranged in geometric patterns that create an effect of warm, textural opulence. The visual impression is one of restrained richness, the natural palette of the straw and bamboo yielding a warm, honeyed tone that glows in natural light. The Chinese-style brass handles add a note of orientalist fantasy entirely in keeping with the decorating taste of interwar France.

Straw marquetry experienced a remarkable revival during the Art Deco period, most famously in the work of Jean-Michel Frank (1895–1941), the austere and brilliant Parisian decorator who applied straw, mica, and parchment to the furniture and walls of his interiors for some of the most sophisticated patrons of the 1920s and 1930s — among them the couturière Elsa Schiaparelli and the Vicomte de Noailles. The combination of straw marquetry with bamboo and chinoiserie hardware in this piece reflects the broader orientalist current in French interwar design, a period when lacquerwork, bamboo, and Chinese-inspired ornament were absorbed into the Art Deco vocabulary with brilliant effect.

This chest of drawers would be an outstanding piece in any interior that prizes the refinement of natural materials and the craft traditions of the French ateliers. Its warm tones would complement both a period Art Deco setting and a more contemporary interior that values the quiet luxury of artisanal work. Its chinoiserie handles and bamboo accents would sit naturally alongside lacquered furniture, rattan pieces, or the natural material furnishings that are currently among the most prized in sophisticated interior decoration.
