Art Déco Patinated Brass Desk Lamp, Manner of Jacques Quinet or Maison Perzel

The desk lamp in the Art Déco period was never merely a source of illumination — it was an object of sculptural intention, as carefully considered as any piece of furniture or objet de vitrine. France led the world in the design and manufacture of Art Déco lighting, and the names that defined this field — Perzel, Lalique, Desny, Damon — produced works that sit today in the collections of major museums alongside the paintings and furniture of the same era.

This lamp, in polished and patinated brass and dating from around 1930, belongs to that distinguished lineage. Its vocabulary — the combination of warm brass and deliberately aged surfaces, the geometric and architectural composition — aligns closely with the work of two of the period's most celebrated practitioners: Jacques Quinet, the Paris-born designer and decorator who brought an architect's rigour to his furniture and lighting, and Maison Perzel, the workshop of the Bavarian-born Jean Perzel near the Porte de Vanves, which produced some of the finest Art Déco desk and table lamps in France.

The juxtaposition of polished and patinated brass — bright and aged surfaces in deliberate contrast — was a hallmark of the French Art Déco interior. It allowed a single material to carry both luminosity and depth, the warm gilt of the polished areas set against the green-brown gravity of the patinated zones, creating an effect of contained luxury without ostentation. At 40 cm square and 49.5 cm tall, the lamp has the architectural presence to anchor a substantial desk or console.

In good condition consistent with its age. A well-crafted example of French Art Déco metalwork from the height of the movement's sophistication, with a strong attribution to the finest makers of the period.
