PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
This elegant table lamp, pairing red celluloid with polished brass fittings, is an unusual and distinguished survivor of French decorative lamp production in the decade following the Liberation. Celluloid — one of the earliest synthetic plastics, derived from cellulose nitrate and camphor — was employed in France from the late nineteenth century for a wide range of decorative and functional objects, including combs, frames, jewellery and lamp components. Its particular virtue in lamp-making lay in its translucency and its capacity to receive vivid colour: when lit, red celluloid transmits a rich, warm light of extraordinary decorative effect, transforming the surrounding space into an atmosphere of rare and intimate warmth.
The mid-twentieth century found celluloid in the later stages of its productive life as a decorative material, as newer thermoplastics began to supplant it in industrial production. Objects made in celluloid from the 1940s and 1950s are consequently collected today both for their material rarity and for their historical position as witnesses to a transitional moment in the history of plastics and designed objects. The combination of celluloid with brass — a warm, worked metal with deep craft associations — reflects the French taste for hybrid objects that unite the traditions of the métier with the expressive possibilities of industrial material innovation.
In good overall condition, the lamp presents well with its red celluloid and brass elements intact. Its generous proportions — 63 centimetres in height over a square footprint of 35.5 by 35.5 centimetres — give it a commanding presence in any interior. An unusual, beautiful and historically resonant piece: at once a decorative object of great warmth and an authentic witness to the material culture of post-war France.
