PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
This umbrella stand in polished brass embodies the Neoclassical tradition in French decorative art with an economy and elegance that speaks equally to the Empire period that inspired it and to the modernist taste of the 1970s that produced it. The piece is built on a simple but highly effective compositional logic: a slender central column rises from a square stepped plinth base, swelling at its foot into a small bulbous form that receives a circular drip tray, then tapering upward to a wide circular ring at the top that receives the handles of umbrellas or walking sticks.
The form is directly inspired by the candelabra and lamp standards of the French Empire and Directoire periods, translated here into the practical language of the umbrella stand. The square plinth, the plain column and the circular ring all recall the vocabulary of ancient Rome as reimagined by Percier and Fontaine for the court of Napoleon I — a vocabulary that never fully fell from favour in French domestic decoration, and which enjoyed significant revivals in the 1950s and 1970s.
The polished brass finish gives the piece a warm, golden presence that animates even the simplest of entrance vestibules. Brass was the characteristic metal of the French Neoclassical revival: harder and warmer than silver plate, more restrained than gilded bronze, it strikes the ideal balance between luxury and practicality that French interior decoration at its best has always favoured.
Measuring 56.5 cm tall with a width of 26.5 cm, this stand has a slender, upright silhouette ideally suited to an entrance hall, library or any space where a touch of French classical elegance is desired. A discreet and functional piece that carries its historical references with lightness and style.
