PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

A striking ceramic vase of generous globular form, its body articulated by a tightly composed geometric decoration executed in polychrome enamels — deep green, sober black and warm ochre — arranged in a continuous pattern of interlocking diamond lozenges and angular borders that envelops the entire surface with the precision of a woven textile. The palette and the rigour of the ornamentation are entirely characteristic of the Art Deco aesthetic at its most refined: a vocabulary of pure geometric abstraction drawing on diverse cultural sources — Aztec, Egyptian and Central European folk art — filtered through the sophisticated sensibility of the interwar period.

The body of the vase rises from a slightly narrowed foot to a full, swelling shoulder before tapering to a short neck, giving the piece a compact and harmonious silhouette that allows the decorative programme to unfold with maximum visual impact. The enamel work is executed with great care, the colours remaining crisp and well-defined, and the surface retaining a fine ceramic glaze that accentuates the depth of the tones. This type of richly ornamented ceramic vase was produced by numerous French and Central European ateliers during the 1920s, the decade that witnessed the full flowering of the Art Deco style across the decorative arts.

A refined and visually compelling piece, this vase would make a distinguished addition to any collection of Art Deco decorative objects. Its bold geometric patterning, accomplished ceramic technique and excellent state of preservation make it a characteristic and desirable example of interwar ornamental craft.
