PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This charming set of four wall lights takes its form from the clover leaf, each appliqué composed in wrought iron as a stylised trefoil bearing its light source. The blackened iron has been worked with skill and confidence, the organic curves of the clover motif contrasting pleasingly with the material's inherent rigidity to produce a design of natural grace and rustic distinction. Offered in a suite of four, these sconces create a unified and highly decorative effect when installed together.

Wrought iron wall lights in the form of natural and botanical motifs enjoyed great popularity in France in the postwar period, particularly in the 1950s, when there was a widespread taste for rustic and artisanal decoration that offered an alternative to the industrial modernism of the preceding decades. The clover or trefoil is one of the oldest and most universal of decorative motifs, present in the decorative arts of medieval France and persisting through the centuries in ironwork, stone carving and embroidery. Its use in a suite of wall lights gives these appliqués a timeless, folkloric quality that transcends any particular period.

This set of four wall lights would create a striking decorative effect in an entrance hall, staircase, dining room or salon, their botanical forms bringing a note of natural poetry to the interior. Their wrought iron construction ensures their durability and compatibility with a range of interior styles, from a rustic or country house setting to a more eclectic urban interior. A charming and characterful suite for the discerning collector.
