PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
This luminous pair of three-arm wall lights is wrought entirely in Murano crystal, each applique presenting arms of clear glass that branch from a central mounting to support candle-cup fittings. The glasswork is handled with the characteristic mastery of Venetian craftsmen: the arms display the subtle variations of thickness, curve, and internal clarity that distinguish hand-blown glass from industrial production. Dating from circa 1940, they belong to a golden period of Murano lighting, when the island's workshops were at the height of their international prestige.
The island of Murano, situated in the Venetian lagoon, has been the centre of Italian glassmaking since the 13th century, when the Republic of Venice ordered its glassblowers to relocate there to protect the city from fire and to safeguard the jealously guarded secrets of the craft. Over the following centuries, Murano's maestri developed techniques — lattimo, filigrana, millefiori, sommerso — that have never been fully equalled elsewhere. In the 20th century, historic houses such as Venini, Seguso Vetri d'Arte, and Barovier & Toso brought the Murano tradition into dialogue with modernism, producing lighting and objects of extraordinary invention. The 1930s and 1940s represent a peak of this creative exchange, as Art Déco sensibilities infused the classical Venetian vocabulary with new vitality and formal rigour.
This pair retains its original glass elements in fine condition. Their intimate scale — 32 cm wide and 18 cm high — renders them ideal for hallways, bedrooms, or small reception rooms, where they will cast the warm, diffused glow characteristic of Venetian crystal. As genuine period examples of Murano glass lighting, they offer both aesthetic pleasure and historical authenticity to the collector or decorator.
