PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
This handsome set of four bronze wall sconces in the Louis XVI style represents a rare and practical ensemble, sufficiently numerous to furnish a complete room with matched lighting. Each sconce is cast in bronze with the vocabulary characteristic of the Louis XVI decorative language: fluted columns or arms, foliate scrolls, and classical motifs drawn from antiquity. The restrained elegance of the neoclassical idiom is here rendered with the confident craftsmanship of French artisans working circa 1940, at a period when the Louis XVI revival was at its height in Parisian interior decoration.
The Louis XVI style emerged at the French court in the 1760s and 1770s, shaped by the Enlightenment's rediscovery of Greek and Roman antiquity and refined under the patronage of Queen Marie-Antoinette and the architects and designers she favoured — among them Jean-Henri Riesener, Georges Jacob, and Pierre Rousseau. Its defining characteristics — precise fluting, delicate garlands, laurel wreaths, and the torch and quiver motifs favoured for lighting fixtures — were revived with great fidelity in the first half of the 20th century by Parisian decorating houses and bronze founders who continued to supply the grands appartements of the French capital. Firms such as Baguès, Lucien Gau, and numerous independent foundries produced bronze appliques and chandeliers in the Louis XVI taste throughout the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s, maintaining craft standards that bridged the Ancien Régime and modern luxury.
This set of four is in fine condition, presenting a good, even bronze patina. The matched configuration allows symmetrical placement along the walls of a salon, dining room, or gallery — a feature that elevates them above single or paired examples in terms of decorative impact and rarity. Their individual scale, 31 cm in height and 23.5 cm wide, is well proportioned for most period and contemporary interiors.
