PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This refined pair of Murano wall lights combines three distinct luxury materials — engraved mirror, crystal, and silvered metal — in an ensemble of characteristic Art Déco sophistication. The engraved mirror, its surface worked with delicate motifs by wheel or diamond-point technique, forms the principal reflective element of each applique, doubling the light of the crystal fittings and lending the pieces a scintillating, multi-dimensional quality unique to Venetian glass art. The silvered metal framework provides structural articulation while complementing the cool, luminous tones of the engraved glass and crystal. Measuring 31 cm in height, they are ideally suited to a bedroom, dressing room, or intimate salon. Dating from circa 1940, they stand as distinguished examples of Venetian Art Déco luxury craftsmanship.

Murano's engagement with the Art Déco movement produced some of the most inventive and distinctive glass objects of the 20th century. The island's master glassworkers — operating through prestigious houses such as Venini, Barovier & Toso, and Seguso Vetri d'Arte — brought their centuries-old expertise in glass engraving, silvering, and crystal-working into dialogue with the geometric boldness and luxury sensibility of the interwar period. The technique of engraving on mirror glass, practised on the Venetian lagoon since the Renaissance, reached a new refinement in the Art Déco era: wheel-engraved or diamond-point patterns applied to mirror backplates and panels created complex plays of transparency and reflection that no other medium could achieve. These appliques, combining mirror, crystal, and silver, represent the luxury end of this production — objects as much for contemplation as for illumination.

This pair is in fine condition with its original engraved mirror and crystal elements intact. The combination of materials — each with its own reflective or refractive quality — creates a lighting effect of exceptional delicacy, particularly beautiful in candlelight or soft artificial illumination. As genuinely rare examples of Venetian Art Déco multi-material wall lighting, they will be prized by collectors of Italian decorative arts and by those who appreciate the exquisite craft of Murano's interwar production.
