The fleur-de-lys is perhaps the most thoroughly French of all heraldic devices, its origins in the royal arms of the Capetian monarchs giving it an authority and a resonance that no other ornamental motif in the French decorative tradition quite matches. Its use as a finial on fireplace andirons has a history stretching back to at least the sixteenth century, when the great ironworkers of the Loire and the Ile-de-France region routinely incorporated royal heraldry into the furnishings of noble and bourgeois interiors alike. This pair of cast iron andirons, produced in France around 1970, carries that long tradition forward with admirable fidelity and craft confidence.

Each andiron is dominated by a generously proportioned fleur-de-lys in cast iron, its three petals — the tapering central blade and the two outward-curving lateral leaves held in their characteristic heraldic collar — rendered with a crispness that speaks well of the casting. The silhouette is immediately readable from across the room, the lily form asserting itself against any background with the visual authority that centuries of royal use have invested in it. The matte black finish, which gives the cast iron a sober, archival quality, enhances rather than suppresses the form, allowing the subtle modelling of the cast surface to be read in strong sidelighting.

The base of each andiron is treated with equal care: scroll feet spread outward to provide stability, their generous curves picking up the lyrical, curvilinear character of the fleur-de-lys above and grounding the whole composition in a satisfying organic coherence. The log bars, extending rearward from the base, are of robust wrought iron construction. Together the two pieces form a pair of considerable presence that serves equally as working fireplace furniture and as decorative objects when the hearth is unlit.

In very good condition with natural patina consistent with age. A pair of unselfconscious quality, carrying the heraldic vocabulary of French history into the domestic interior with the ease of a tradition thoroughly at home in its own skin.
