Pair of Black Lacquered Steel and Brass Stag Head Andirons, French circa 1970

A striking pair of andirons in black lacquered steel and brass, each upright formed as a boldly graphic silhouette of a stag head with a full spread of antlers. The stag is depicted in profile, its head and antler rack rendered in a flat, cut-steel technique that transforms a naturalistic subject into a powerfully abstract graphic form—part heraldic charge, part modernist reduction. The black lacquer finish intensifies the silhouette effect, the dark form standing in dramatic relief against the stone or marble of the hearth surround. The low hearth bar in warm-toned brass provides the grounding element, its spread legs giving the pair a confident, wide stance.

The result reads clearly from across a room while rewarding close examination of its precise cut-steel detailing.

In very good condition consistent with age, the black lacquer largely intact and the brass hearth bar retaining its warm colour. A handsome and characterful pair for any fireplace with a connection to the hunting and country house tradition.
