PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
A confident pair of andirons in blackened wrought iron, exemplifying the vigorous modernist tradition of French fireplace metalwork that flourished through the mid and late twentieth century. Each andiron presents an open ring finial atop a slender vertical rod, the upright anchored to a low, wide-splayed tripod base whose three legs spread firmly across the hearth floor. The all-iron, monochromatic treatment—worked to a consistent matte-black finish—gives the pair a graphic clarity well-suited to both period and contemporary interiors.
The ring or anneau finial was one of the defining motifs of French modernist metalwork from the 1930s onward, associated principally with the formal language of Jacques Adnet and his circle and subsequently adopted by successive generations of French blacksmiths. Here the motif is treated with economy: a single clean circle, perfectly closed, crowning a vertical that is otherwise undecorated. The restraint is deliberate—every element earns its place.
The tripod base is an alternative to the more common arched or X-shaped bases found in comparable andirons of the period, giving this pair a distinctive silhouette that catches the eye without demanding it. The three-point stance is also practical, ensuring stable footing on uneven hearthstone without the rocking that can affect two-legged bases.
In good condition consistent with age and use, the blackened finish intact. A well-resolved and versatile pair that will complement fireplace settings from the traditional to the strictly contemporary.
