PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
A striking pair of andirons in gilded bronze and wrought iron, conceived in the Louis XVI manner and distinguished by their large-scale volute uprights of considerable theatrical presence. Each front support takes the form of a tightly coiled spiral scroll—a motif drawn from antique classical ornament and freely interpreted by French bronziers throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The bronze catches the light with a warm gilt patina, the tight coils creating a play of shadow and lustre that lends the pair an imposing sculptural weight.
Signed Armor Din, these andirons bear the mark of a French foundry or atelier active in the interwar period. The quality of the bronze casting is notable: the volute is cleanly defined, the surface evenly worked, and the junction between the cast bronze upright and the wrought iron hearth bar is neatly executed. Such signed pieces occupy a distinguished position in the hierarchy of French decorative metalwork, bridging the gap between period reproductions and true artisanal commissions.
The volute or scroll is among the most enduring motifs in French fireplace furniture. Associated with the Ionic order in antiquity, it found renewed expression in the Louis XV and Louis XVI idioms, appearing on console table legs, fire tools, and andirons alike. By the interwar decades, historicist forms were enjoying a refined revival, with leading Paris foundries producing high-quality period-style pieces for the finest hôtels particuliers and châteaux.
In very good condition consistent with age, retaining the warm gilt surface and robust structural integrity. An elegant and emphatic pair that will anchor any fireplace surround with quiet authority.
