PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

These wrought iron andirons are distinguished by an unusual decorative vocabulary that sets them apart from the mainstream of mid-century ironwork. The uprights are formed from a looping, figure-eight knotwork element — two interlaced loops of forged iron drawn together at the waist — creating a form of sculptural density and visual tension rare in functional fireplace furniture. Above this central motif, a simple circular ring serves as the finial, its spare geometry offering a deliberate counterpoint to the complex weaving below.

The bases are formed from a clean arched bar, springing from two flat feet and carrying the decorative upright with understated elegance. From the rear of each base, a horizontal log bar projects to support the firewood, combining structural practicality with the same refined restraint visible throughout the design. The proportions are compact and well-considered: at 30 cm in height, the andirons command presence without imposing scale.

The knotwork form has deep roots in French decorative tradition, present in medieval illumination, Romanesque stonework, and the vocabulary of the Compagnonnage craft guilds — journeymen blacksmiths who elevated ironwork to a test of technical mastery. In the mid-twentieth century, this language was revived by artisan forgers working outside the prevailing modernist orthodoxy, who found in the knot a motif at once archaic and plastic, capable of animating flat iron stock into sculptural life. The circa 1940 dating places these andirons at the intersection of Art Deco’s late flowering and the wartime turn toward craft and material authenticity.

An uncommon and characterful pair, suited to fireplaces of distinction where a piece of artisanal craft is preferred to purely industrial or period reproduction furniture.
