PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

These compact modernist andirons achieve a quiet formal distinction through the combination of two simple elements: a cylindrical brass cap finial and a forked wrought iron upright whose two legs splay outward to form a stable, A-frame-like structure. The contrast between the warm polished brass at the top and the matte black iron of the body is a material dialogue characteristic of the most refined French fireplace accessories of the postwar decades, here deployed with particular economy in a design of considerable sculptural presence given its modest dimensions.

The forked or bifurcated upright is an unusual formal choice that departs from the single-column tradition of most French andirons, giving these pieces a dynamic, energetic quality — the stance of a tripod, each leg gripping the hearth floor with the steady assurance of a well-engineered structure. This form carries a quietly industrial logic, recalling the structural principles of the machine age that were so pervasive in French design of the mid-twentieth century. The brass element at the summit — small, precise, cylindrical — acts as a formal full stop, completing the upward movement of the fork with a deliberate material contrast.

At twenty-one centimetres tall and twelve centimetres wide, these are intimate-scale andirons, suited to a small fireplace rather than a grand hearth. Their very compactness makes them particularly interesting as decorative objects: they can be placed on a mantelpiece or shelf when not in use, functioning equally as small sculptures in the modernist idiom.

In excellent condition, the brass caps retaining their original warm patina and the forked iron uprights presenting a consistent, evenly finished surface with no distortion or loss.
