These bold wrought iron andirons carry the fleur-de-lys — the most ancient and persistent emblem of the French heraldic and decorative tradition — as their principal ornamental motif. Each upright is crowned with a tripartite lily, its central petal rising to a sharp point flanked by two outswept lateral petals, the whole silhouette executed with the confident graphic simplicity characteristic of the finest French ironwork. Supporting the main standard, a pair of scrolled lateral arms provides structural stability while adding a further note of decorative complexity.

The fleur-de-lys as a blacksmithing motif has roots extending deep into the medieval period, when it appeared on Gothic grilles, hinges, finials, and weathervanes across France and the broader European craft tradition. By the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, it had become a touchstone of the French artisanal ironworking identity — a form so deeply embedded in the grammar of the forge that its appearance in pieces of any period reads less as revival than as continuation. The workshops of the Loire valley, the Auvergne, and the Paris region continued to produce fleur-de-lys ironwork throughout the twentieth century, maintaining the gestural directness and material honesty of the medieval tradition.

At fifty-one centimetres high, these are andirons of commanding stature, well proportioned for a generous fireplace opening. The extended log bar at the rear, with its horizontal rod on low bracket supports, is entirely practical and traditionally formed. The overall profile — fleur-de-lys upright, flanking scrollwork, arched base, log rest — is one that would have been immediately recognizable to a French blacksmith of any century.
