PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

These dramatic andirons reduce the fireplace standard to its most essential and expressive elements: a flat, grounded base and a pair of sweeping curved uprights that arc upward and backward with the energy of a flame or the gesture of a wing. Executed in matte black steel, each andiron presents as a piece of abstract sculpture in its own right, the curved upright terminating in a slight forward curl at its apex — a detail that gives the form an organic tension between extension and enclosure.

The design belongs to the confident abstract vocabulary of French decorative metalwork in the late 1960s and early 1970s, a moment when the fireplace accessory was reimagined as a design object in dialogue with contemporary sculpture and architecture. This formal language — paring the andiron to pure line and volume, stripping away all ornamental reference — is characteristic of a generation of French designers and ferroniers who sought to reclaim the craft in modernist terms. The influence of Italian design, with its emphasis on bold, reduced form and industrial materials, is also legible in pieces such as these.

The flat rectangular base plates, which anchor each andiron firmly to the hearth floor, provide a grounding counterpoint to the upward movement of the uprights, their weight and solidity throwing the lightness of the curve into relief. At thirty-six and a half centimetres high, the pair offers a strong vertical presence without dominating the fireplace opening.

A sculptural and architecturally confident pair, these andirons would integrate seamlessly into a modernist, minimalist, or contemporary interior. They are in excellent condition, with the original matte finish intact and no deformation to the uprights.
