PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Each andiron of this pair takes the form of a seated dog modelled in cast bronze, the body rendered with the bold geometric stylization characteristic of the French Art Déco period. The animals are depicted with upright posture and alert expression, their coats translated into a pattern of angular, interlocking planes that transform the naturalistic subject into a work of pure decorative sculpture.
The casting quality is fine throughout, with carefully articulated detail in the musculature, fur treatment, and stepped rectangular plinth. The warm golden bronze patina — developed over nearly a century of use — lends the pair a rich tonality that enhances the sculptural relief of the figures. Such figural andirons served equally as functional fireplace accessories and as objects of display.
French bronziers of the 1920s and 1930s frequently chose the dog as a motif for luxury furnishings, echoing its prominence in the decorative arts of the period alongside other favored animals of the Art Déco menagerie. The present pair, with its strongly stylized modelling and robust casting, represents a characteristic example of this production.
