PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This remarkable pair of French wrought iron andirons presents one of the most inventive designs encountered in mid-century fireplace accessories: each andiron is fashioned as an abstract human figure, the iron rod shaped into a composition of ball finial, open lozenge torso, spreading branch-like arms, and curling scroll feet. The resulting silhouette is simultaneously anthropomorphic and wholly abstract, recalling the figural vocabulary of contemporary sculptors such as Alberto Giacometti or Alexander Calder.

The construction combines hand-forged elements with evident mastery of the blacksmith’s craft. The ball terminal, formed from solid iron, crowns each upright with a weighty, grounded presence. Below it, the iron rod loops to form an open lozenge shape suggesting a torso, before splitting into angular arms extending outward to either side. The base consists of two volute scrolls curling inward, providing stability while adding a baroque accent that contrasts pleasantly with the otherwise stripped-down, modernist vocabulary.

Such figural andirons, conceived at the intersection of applied art and sculpture, represent a significant strand of French craft production in the 1930s and 1940s, when the best blacksmiths—working in the tradition of Edgar Brandt, Raymond Subes, and their successors—sought to animate functional objects with figurative invention. The present pair, with its confident, almost playful anthropomorphism, is a fine example of this tendency.

A pair of considerable artistic quality and originality, in good condition throughout. The spare, human-like silhouette will animate any fireplace with wit and character.
