PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This impressive and substantial pair of modernist andirons — designated "important" by virtue of their exceptional scale and artistic quality — represents French decorative ironwork of the highest order. Each piece, standing fifty-one centimetres tall, is constructed from flat wrought iron plate assembled into a boldly simplified form: a tall vertical shaft surmounted by a large circular tubular loop, the whole supported on an outswept anchor-like base of flat iron bars extending in angular diagonals. The overall silhouette — loop, shaft, anchor — is at once architecturally powerful and sculpturally resolved.

The circular loop finial, formed from a cylindrical ring of wrought iron, is the dominant visual element, its simple perfection contrasting with the angular geometry of the base. The vertical shaft, of substantial flat plate, connects these two elements with disciplined austerity, its flat surfaces catching the firelight and creating a subtle play of shadow on the hearth floor. This purity of form belongs squarely to the French modernist tradition of the 1930s and 1940s, in which the metalworker’s art was shaped by the formal lessons of the Bauhaus, Art Déco, and the broader European avant-garde.

Andirons of this scale and formal vocabulary were typically destined for the large reception fireplaces of private hôtels particuliers, châteaux or major public commissions, where their imposing dimensions and bold silhouette would register effectively across a grand chimney surround. The quality of ironwork is entirely consistent with the output of the leading Paris ateliers of the interwar period, and the formal kinship with the work of Raymond Subes and his circle is evident.

In very good overall condition with an even, warm reddish-black patina throughout. A pair of andirons of commanding presence and significant scale, perfectly suited to the large period fireplace and to any interior in which quality French modernist ironwork is a priority.
