Pair of Bronze and Wrought Iron Andirons with Fleur-de-Lys Uprights. France. Circa 1940.

This pair of andirons presents one of the most enduring motifs in French heraldic and decorative art: the fleur-de-lys. Each upright is cast in bronze as a bold and fully three-dimensional heraldic lily — the ribbed central petal rising to a sharply pointed tip, flanked by two large curling lateral scrolls and two smaller lower scrolls at the base — all rendered with considerable sculptural vitality. The fleur-de-lys, long the emblem of the French crown and a symbol of sovereign France, retains in these andirons an air of aristocratic dignity entirely appropriate to the fireside setting.

The uprights are set on wrought iron bases with scrolled feet, providing a stable footing while maintaining a decorative coherence with the organic curves of the bronze above. The horizontal wrought iron log rest bar extends to the rear in a simple rectangular profile, its plain iron contrasting effectively with the richly worked bronze uprights.

Dating to circa 1940, this pair belongs to a tradition of high-quality French decorative metalwork in which the historical and heraldic vocabularies of the Ancien Régime were maintained and celebrated in the production of fine domestic accessories. The warm and even antique bronze patina enhances the sculpted surfaces with characteristic depth and gravitas.
